The Nigerian government has suspended Twitter indefinitely.
This follows the removal of a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari. In this tweet he threatened to punish separatist militants in South East Nigeria.
The full tweet read:
“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
The reasoning behind Twitter’s banning in Nigeria was described as “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” by Lai Mohammed, the Information Minister.
Ironically, the announcement was made via Twitter…
