Matt Hancock (Health Secretary), Jenny Harries (Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England), and Susan Hopkins of Public Health England.
UPDATE ON COVID-19 INFECTIONS AND DEATHS
Total UK deaths are up to 98,531, with 592 deaths reported today.
UPDATE ON VACCINATION ROLLOUT PROGRAMME
6.5 million people have so far received their first dose of vaccine and 470,478 have received both jabs.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POINTS RAISED BY THE PANEL
- Whilst many people may have Covid antibodies, it’s not clear how they will work against new variants or how long protection will last
- Public Health England is working with organisations across the world to predict how the vaccine might need to be adapted to new variants
- But the current vaccine works well against the new UK variant, as do existing treatments.
- There has been high uptake of the vaccine.
