So last time, we focused on alternative hip hop artists from the USA. Both old school and new generation.

Today’s top 5 alternative hip hop artists will focus on the best from our own UK. There are so many to choose from, but we have picked out the real underdogs who we feel should get more recognition.

1. Young Fathers

This Edinburgh trio are absolutely incredible, they sound even better live. Their electrifying afro sounding beats combined with catchy hooks and verses, they well and truly deserve every success and listen they can get. Oh and they have super slick dance moves. This is one of my fave live performances they did, even Jools Holland was late to the game with this lot.

2. Kojey Radical

I first saw this artist when he supported the previous on their tour. Kojey has come a long way since I last saw him and boy, he is good. His lyrics are always so emotive and his beats are matched to perfection, especially on this latest collab with the neo-jazz group Sons of Kemet.

3. Loyle Carner

Okay, I will still count Loyle as alternative, even though he is quite famous now. His collaborations with the likes of Sampha make you focus on his message with gentler, less severe beats. It is truly beautiful music.

4. Children of Zeus

Although these guys hail from the fine city of Manchester, I see them as the UK cousins of Run The Jewels, with an RnB/Neo Soul edge. Their music is so new, but has that comforting feel of a 90s throwback which we are here for.

5. Little Simz

This lady has a flow and a sound that is unlike any other I’ve heard from a female hip hop artist. She may be seen as alternative now, for her choice of collaborators and music, but I think this girl has potential to crash the mainstream and make it massive, with her latest track being a testament to this. Always with a social message we need to hear, Introvert is no exception to the rule.
