On the latest Red Table Talk, the conversation is polyamorous relationships.
Red Table Talk is a place where Jada Pinkett Smith, her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris aka Gammy and daughter Willow Smith come together to discuss a variety of social and cultural topics.
In June 2019, an episode aired, “Unconventional Relationships: Can Multiple Partners Work?”
In this episode, Jada Pinkett Smith reveals Willow Smith’s research around polyamory and they interview a throuple.
They give the definition:
“Polyamory is a relationship is an honest, romantic relationship with multiple people at the same time.”
“A throuple is a type of polyamorous relationship. Three people having a consensual romance.”
“Polyamory is not polygamy – that is when a man has multiple wives. It’s not swinging, when couples have casual sex”
In this episode, Willow Smith uses her research as the precursor for her opinions, but does admit this is something she is interested in. It is very clear Gammy is less convinced.
Willow Smith said she would be open to being in a polyamorous relationship, especially because she is attracted to all genders.
The latest episode, “Is Polyamory for you?”, Willow Smith explains she is polyamorous.
They hold a discussion about marriage, monogamy and relationships across the generations.
This episode starts with Jayda Pinkett Smith saying:
“Willow and her polyamory explorations. I love it”
She goes on to say, “Do you believe in monogamy? Being with one person romantically and sexually until death do us part, hunny? For many younger people, like Willow, the answer is no.”
When asking how her daughter came to this decision, Willow Smith responds:
“I feel the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not stepping into monogamy because that is what everyone around you says is the right thing to do”
Willow Smith explains she has researched polyamory, monogamy and why most marriage fail: infidelity. Gammy states it sound like it’s all about sex.
When discussing what polyamory can offer you, Willow Smith asks her Grandma, “Could you imagine being in a group and loving everyone equally?” to which she responds, “No.”
They discuss the expectations, intentions and making the choice to be in a relationships.
“What is the purpose of your togetherness – it has to be bigger than you” says Jada Pinkett Smith.
She talks about Justin and Hayley Bieber who’s “North star is serving God.”
They interview a polyamorous woman, Gabrielle Smith, who is solopolyamorous, which means she has multiple partners and none are them are more important than others.
Once again, Jada Pinkett Smith explains she is intrigued, Willow Smith is excited and Gammy is “deeply confused”.
There was a wide response on Twitter:
Why does polyamory induce such a visceral response? As long as everyone consents its no one's business but those involved. Yet I still can't help but judge.

I don’t consider a 20 year old to be an expert in these matters but it’s excellent than non-traditional lifestyles are getting more attention in popular culture.#polyamoryhttps://t.co/lK7hLt5ja2
