Dreamville’s Bas and J.Cole link up with New York’s Lil Tjay to drop the recently teased tune ‘The Jackie’

Due to Bas and J.Cole being long term friends and founding members of Dreamville, they are frequent collaborators, holding them responsible for some of the finest hip-hop cross overs in recent years, such as Bas’ ‘Tribe’ , Dreamville’s ‘Down Bad’ and even the impressive cameo appearances on Cole’s ‘The Off Season album’ which came out recently.

Adding Lil Tjay to the mix adds a fresh contrast of sounds to the track, with a more melodic, younger voice from Tjay being included, even if he isn’t as lyrically gifted as Cole and Bas on paper.

Despite these assumptions, some would debate that Lil Tjay has the best verse on the song. The song has a T-Minus produced trap beat which Cole delivers a not often seen melodic hook, similar to his vocals on ‘100 mill ft Bas’ or some of his lines on Young Thug’s ‘The London’, his verse is predominantly sung, much like Bas’ verse which is refreshing as many would associate Cole and Bas with traditional Hip-Hop delivery. It also displays the versatility of the artists, even if some of the vocals could maybe sound a little better. The instrumental however, suits Lil Tjay’s voice and delivery well, and it turns what is perceived as an odd collaboration, into a well constructed match, even if it is different to what fans were wanting and anticipating.
